The County Wicklow village of Newtown-Mount-Kennedy, 9 miles north of Wicklow and about the same distance south of Bray, was a village in its own right within the historic town of Ballygarny. In the middle of the 17th century the MP for Kildare, Sir Robert Kennedy, made it his principal residence and gave it its present day name. In the middle of the 19th century it held its own race meetings for a silver cup on Killendrenan, a substantial property owned by James Edwards. The earliest record of a meeting was on Monday 28th March 1842 when the keenly contested Silver Cup was won by Mr William Clement’s Fakeaway after a hard fought tussle with Miller and Whitestockings. Meetings certainly continued for at least three years, with the Silver Cup attracting an entry of eight on Thursday 10th April 1845.
